Otis A. Lewis

Otis A. Lewis, known as "Taurus" in the calypso world, was born May 12 1974. Trinidadian by birth, Otis spent his early years in the countryside, Moruga, before moving up north to Santa Cruz.

Otis always loved to sing along with calypsos being played on the radio. It was in 1993, when he met Samuel Abraham, "Brigo"; Otis learnt to compose his own songs. He regards Brigo as his teacher and mentor.

Singing with Brigos Cultural Theatre, Taurus appeared on many shows, in prominent culture centers such as Mas Camp Pub, St. James and Carat Shed, Marabella.

In 1995 Taurus migrated to Toronto where he immediately got involved singing with O.C.P.A (Organization of Calypso Performing Artiste). He continues to sing at many venues in Toronto. He was selected for the cast of one of T.Os hottest "Tents", C.C.I.G Cultural Stars. After spending two years with this organization, Taurus moved on to join the cast of another prominent "Tent", The Ramajay Kaiso All Stars. He gains numerous encores with each performance.

1996 was the first recording year for this young calypsonian. The song was entitled "Jam of Class". He also recorded "Devil Mas", 1997, which was featured on the main chart in Trinidad compiled by the Downtown Outlaws, based on airplay and sales. His recording "Doh Promise", 1998, was another riser on the charts.

Taurus has also done other recordings such as "Rub me Down", "Superbad" and "Fight Back", to mention a few, all of which seem to immediately hook the audience wherever he performs.

When returning to Trinidad, for Carnival, Taurus makes it his duty to appear in schools. He believes we must teach the children the art while entertaining them.

In 1998 Taurus took part in Canadas first Humor Competition and Extempore Competition. He placed second in the Extempore Competition. Taurus has been a semi-finalist as well as finalist in Torontos calypso and soca competitions. He was also nominated by the Sunshine Awards Committee for "Best New Artiste 1996".
